The Outlook
January 2006

Welcome

Happy New Year! To get us started, the first order of business is reporting the results of our survey about forest certification. Very interesting indeed. Next, our reports this month address the common conundrum of Finding New Markets and the even more exasperating experience of reading between the lines on U.S. Forest Statistics.

Also, please mark your calendars for April 11th and 12th when Dovetail, in partnership with the Wood Education and Resource Center will hold a workshop at the Center's facilities in Princeton, West Virginia. The workshop, Helping the Wood Industry Profit from the Next 10 Years includes an agenda filled with presentations from leading innovators in the industry who made dramatic changes in their companies to survive in the face of rapid marketplace changes and global competition. These innovators provide compelling models of success and this workshop provides a unique opportunity to understand the details of their decisions. Information about registration is being finalized and will be added to the workshop webpage at http://www.dovetailinc.org/wercworkshop.html.

Drop us an email at info@dovetailinc.org with your name and address if you would like to receive a reminder when registration materials are available.

The Survey Results Are In

It's Time for 10,000 Voices to be Heard!

Dr. Jeff Howe

In the fall of 2005 Dovetail undertook its first online survey.   We asked our readership to respond to three questions:

  • What are the three most important goals of certification?
  • What are the three most important accomplishments or impacts resulting from certification's existence?
  • What are the three most critical issues forest certification has yet to address?

Overall, readers were very clear on what needs to be addressed in the future, but less united on the goals of certification and what has been accomplished to date.

U.S. Forest Statistics Paint a Picture of Dynamic Growth and Renewal as Well as Problems Ahead
Dr. Jim Bowyer

When forests reach the headlines, the news is rarely good.   Moreover, when forests are the topic of one of those fundraising appeals that appear periodically in the mailbox, the news is never good.

Messages in the media and bulk mail notwithstanding, what are the trends in U.S. forests?   This report examines national forest statistics as gathered by on-the-ground forest survey crews representing federal land management agencies and state departments of natural resources, and as summarized by forest survey specialists in the nation's forest experiment stations.  Based on this data, it turns out the current reality is far better than commonly reported, though the trends are not uniformly positive.  Over time, and in region after region, what the data indicate is a remarkable record of dynamic growth and forest renewal following disturbance. However, several important indicators suggest problems ahead.

Finding New Markets
Dr. Jeff Howe

Our August newsletter report, Fundamentals of Marketing, introduced the reader to the overall discussion of how to manage markets, products, channels and marketing programs.   It was kind of the “everything you ever wanted to know, but were afraid to ask,” version of marketing, in twelve pages.   There are two additional marketing processes for which organizations often seek more information - the process of finding new markets for existing products and the process of developing successful new products.   This article introduces the reader to the basics of how to identify new markets.   The new product development process will be addressed in a future newsletter article.
