The Outlook
July 2005

Welcome

Summer is in full swing - with all the sun, humidity and mosquitos you'd ever imagine! The tomatoes are ripening and the zucchini vines have jumped the neighbor's fence. Amazingly enough, in between all these distractions, we have managed to piece together another newsletter!

This month we are:
- looking at the future of the pulp and paper industry in the U.S.,
- exploring the oft overlooked connections between baseball, cowboy hats, and marketing 101, and

- outlining effective organizational visioning & planning.

Also, we want to remind you that the USGBC has put out the LEED-NC v2.2 system for the second public comment period (July 1st - July 30th). For more information, visit: http://www.usgbc.org . Also, FSC-US has launched a first annual award program for green building projects utilizing FSC-certified materials. For more information and application guidelines, visit: http://www.fscus.org .

Lastly, thanks for all the great feedback about the newsletter, our publications, and the new website. Glad to see so many of you have taken the Search Engine for a spin! You've been giving us great advice and direction, and we appreciate it all. Keep it comin'!

- Jeff

Baseball, Cowboy Hats, and Marketing 101

Have you ever wondered why baseball players aren’t wearing cowboy hats? I mean, at the turn of the century and in the formative years of our national past-time broad brimmed hats were ubiquitous and Stetson was to hats what Xerox is to photocopying today. So how does the history of baseball caps apply to marketing green products today? Well, the key is still the same. Green products need to fit specific needs, and the better they address those needs the better they fit the marketplace.

The North American Pulp and Paper Industry: A Key Player in the Coming Bio-revolution

Dr. Jim Bowyer

Throughout the twentieth century the North American pulp and paper industry supplied domestic markets while also serving global markets as a net exporter. It was, and remains, the world’s largest pulp and paper industry.

In recent decades, however, fortunes have begun to change. Despite the fact that paper and paperboard consumption has more than doubled in the United States since 1970, there have been no new domestic paper mills constructed since 1989, and no new paper machines brought on line since the mid 1990s.

In response to the challenge posed by global competitors the domestic paper industry has identified a new strategic direction and embarked on an aggressive research initiative in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy and a number of universities. The clear direction is toward conversion of existing pulp and paper mills to full biorefineries, capable of producing not only pulp and paper, but bio-fuels, bio-chemicals, and bio-feedstocks as well.

Organizational Vision & Planning: If you don't know where you're going, any path will get you there!
Dr. Jeff Howe

Today companies trying to navigate the stormy seas of competitive markets are facing extraordinary rates of change.   Drive-thru expectations have met Internet access and combined to generate customers that are well informed, demanding, and have unlimited options.   Organizations that succeed in the face of these winds of change are finding that a clear organizational vision is the anchor that keeps their company from drifting into oblivion.   However, many companies put little effort into defining and clarifying a vision of what they strive to be.   Vision is the most important component of a company's plan , yet often the most neglected and misunderstood,.    When was the last time YOU spent any time, or more a few minutes on your organizational vision?
