Making a List and Checking it Twice With another national election on the horizon and another round of New Year's Resolutions looming, it is perhaps a perfect time to write up our wish list. At the top of our national list should be the wish for a national raw materials policy and a comprehensive energy policy. The U.S. currently has neither of these - even in the face of record net import dependence and rapid and profound change in competition for raw materials at a global scale. There is every indication that the strategic, economic, environmental, and social well-being of current and future generations literally hinges on such policies and their proactive implementation going forward.
Our report this month explores and re-caps some of the history of material and energy policies in the United States and offers some recommendations for action. Just as we release this report, Congress has passed a new energy policy that awaits being signed into law. Perhaps this represents a start in the right direction. - Jeff
Rapidly rising industrial raw material consumption globally, and increasing U.S. import dependence on a vast array of critical resources warrant close attention and strategic thinking on the part of government and industry leaders alike.
The most urgent material requiring attention is petroleum. Development of a comprehensive national energy strategy that serves to markedly reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels must clearly be a top priority. The strategic, financial, environmental, and social implications of continuing on our present course are so great that further delay in addressing energy issues is completely indefensible.
It is time not only for political leaders, but individual citizens as well, to engage in introspection and careful consideration of how you or your organization might play a part in reaching solutions.
