The Outlook
February 2005

Welcome

This edition of The Outlook introduces the issue of conflict resolution.  It is our experience that, too often, conflict is approached without a game plan, and the results reflect this lack of process. Collaboration is the ideal process for resolving complex problems.  The bad news is that few individuals have well developed collaborative skills. The good news is that these skills are learned, not inherited, and can also be attained indirectly through the use of professional facilitation.

Additionally, our February newsletter provides two new reports.  The report, “ Why Not in My Back Yard? ” discusses the NIMBY approach to environmental issues and proposes a more comprehensive impact evaluation for proposed projects, a Global Environmental Impact Assessment .   Our second report continues our series on certification by providing a primer on the International Standards Organization, ISO, and its relationship to forest certification systems.

As always, we hope you find our newsletter valuable, and we invite your feedback.

When 1 + 1 = 3!
Jeff Howe, February 2005

Collaboration is the win-win situation, when the debate between two conflicting approaches results in a third approach, better than either one individually.   Literally, one plus one equals three.

Collaboration is the best approach for resolving complex, deep-rooted conflicts like those involved with the environment .   The parties sit down, get all the issues on the table, identify the possible solutions, and select the best solutions for each issue rather than for each side.   The key is for both parties to have a similar end goal in sight.

Why Not in My Backyard?
Dr. Jim Bowyer
It has become standard operating procedure in the United States. On a daily basis, and at all levels of government, environmentally-inspired decisions are being made that are designed to prevent, halt, or markedly restrict resource extraction and primary processing of those resources.   In region after region the environmental impacts of mining, smelting, drilling, sand and gravel extraction, timber harvesting, and even bottling of water are deemed to be unacceptable.   A yard sign in a northern rural community located near a proposed new mining operation sums up what appears to be a prevailing attitude – “Not in Anyone's Back Yard!”

Beginner’s Guide to the International Organization for Standardization:
Fitting ISO with Forest Certification

Kathryn Fernholz

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a non-governmental, membership-based organization.   ISO is the world's largest standard setting organization and has members from 146 countries.    ISO members are government or non-government standard setting organizations.   The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) represents the United States and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) represents Canada.

Since 1947, ISO has published more than 13,000 standards for everything from medical devices to screw threads.   The general goal of all ISO standards is to “contribute to making the development, manufacturing and supply of products and services more efficient, safer and cleaner.”
