Dovetail Reports All reports are available online at: http://www.dovetailinc.org/publications.htm Paper from Agricultural Residues Dr. Jim Bowyer There are literally thousands of straw-based paper mills in operation worldwide, with most of these in China and India. Conservative estimates indicate that the current availability of agricultural residues could expand the supply of papermaking fiber in the U.S. by 7-10 percent if only cereal straws (stalks of wheat, barley, and oats) are considered, and by up to 40 percent if corn stalks also prove to be a viable source of industrial fiber. However, the environmental benefits of the use of agricultural residues as a source of fiber in papermaking are dependent on the specific region and situation. Some of of the impacts to consider are disposal, chemical usage in pulping, energy demands, and transportation. To read the introduction online and access the full report. Beginner’s Guide to Third-Party Forest Certification Shining a Light on the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Phil Guillery There are several prominent forest certification systems in North America. One of these systems, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is the focus of this article. The SFI program has a total of over 136 million acres enrolled, making it one of the largest sustainable forestry programs in the world. Nearly 70 SFI program participants have completed 3rd-party certification on over 90 million acres in North America. For land managers and others considering forest certification, this report aims to introduce readers to the standards, governance structure and other basic elements of the SFI system. Family Forests, Tree Farm, and FSC Kathryn Fernholz This report explores the challenges and opportunities of family forest certification and the relative strengths and weaknesses of the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) programs as they relate to family forestlands. This paper also touches on the other approaches that are available for these landowners. The goal is to increase the reader's understanding of these programs and to assist family forest owners, and organizations working in their interest, in selecting and promoting the certification approach that best fits their needs and objectives. The Dovetail Workshop, " Responsible Material Choices: Wood Products for Green Building " will be delivered on the afternoon of November 4th. Nearly 100 architects, builders, designers and others have already registered for the workshop which has been approved for continuing education credit (1.0 HSW Hours). The presentation will demonstrate how forest certification provides assurance that ecological, sociological, and economic concerns about forest management are being addressed. The workshop will also provide information about how certified forest products can be specified and identified. The LEED standards and Minnesota's B3 Sustainable Building Design Guide recognize certified forest products that meet certain criteria. For more information about the convention, visit: http://www.aia-mn.org .
