What is Forest to Tap?

F2T is a project to share the knowledge that forests and good forest management contribute greatly to the clean waters of Minnesota, and thus great beer.

The Forest Friendly Brewery Project (“Forest to Tap” and "F2T"), is a non-profit based project, planned and supported by a diverse group of natural resource interests, whose common denominator is the knowledge that good forest management – including planting, harvesting, and stewardship - results in clean and healthy water for wildlife, communities, businesses – and ultimately for beer! The project is focused on providing information about how good forest management practices provide clean water. The ‘avenue’ to that education is through partnering with craft breweries, (the end users of water), to spread the message.

Sponsors and endorsers include: The Forest Stewards Guild, Dovetail Partners, The Minnesota Forest Resources Partnership, The Minnesota Logger Education Program, The Nature Conservancy, Long Lake Conservation Center, The Blandin Foundation, Certified Wood Products, Savanna Pallets, UPM-Blandin Paper Company, Healthy Forests-Healthy Communities, and 91.7 KAXE/90.5 KBXE.

A participating ‘forest friendly brewery’ agrees to put up a poster and/or display the F2T logo and provide staff training so that staff can respond to interest from inquiring customers. F2T has also created a short video on the forests/waters connection.

The objective in 2019 is to pilot the program with craft breweries in the Mississippi Headwaters Basin of northern Minnesota.  A logical expansion in the year ahead would include the breweries of the Lake Superior basin (and beyond).

Breweries currently signed on include:

  • Bemidji - Bemidji, MN
  • Portage - Walker, MN
  • Klockow – Grand Rapids, MN
  • Rapids – Grand Rapids, MN
  • Block North - Aitkin, MN
