Join Dovetail Partners at the 2016 American Institute of Architects Convention

 

Dovetail's Executive Director to present on social, environmental, and economic sustainability of forest resources and wood building materials

 

(Minneapolis, MN) - Join Dovetail Partners, a Minneapolis-based environmental think tank, at the 2016 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Convention from May 19th-21st in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. AIA is the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals and allied partners in the U.S. The annual convention is geared towards architects, designers, business leaders, industry reps, researchers and students. This year's convention will host nearly 200 seminars, 100 tours, 40 events and 800 exhibitors. Attendees have the opportunity to earn up to a year's worth of AIA continuing education credits, including HSW, ADA, GBCI, and RIBA credits.

 

Kathryn Fernholz, Dovetail's Executive Director, will present a session on Friday, May 20th from 7:00-8:00am titled, "Design Triple Bottom Line: The Quest for Success". In this session, attendees will gain insight into the selection of materials to support crafting a sustainable, high-performance environment that achieves "triple bottom line" goals. Ms. Fernholz will share experiences in her quest to support social, environmental, and economic sustainability of forest resources and the building materials they provide. Attendees will gain a greater ability to analyze material selection choices to address considerations of social, environmental and economic impact; including how to quantify environmental choices in the selection of materials through the use of life cycle analysis (LCA) and carbon accounting; utilize available tools and information to investigate the environmental claims of building materials, including certification program resources; and explore recent innovations in the use of wood, the quantifying of the environmental benefits, and the use of forest products to economically support sustainable management of forest lands.

 

Kathryn Fernholz is a forester by training and has led certification projects and efforts to build capacity for systems that are compatible with responsible sourcing standards. She has served as Chair of the Minnesota Society of American Foresters and as a member of the Minnesota Forest Resources Council. She is a past Board Member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council and served on the NSF Joint Committee on Dimensional Stone Sustainability. Ms. Fernholz has a B.S. in Forest Resources from the University of Minnesota, College of Natural Resources.
