Join Dovetail Partners at the Southern Wood Utilization Education Summit

Dovetail's Founder to present on green building, life cycle analysis and carbon sequestration

(Minneapolis, MN) - Join Dovetail Partners, a Minneapolis-based environmental think tank, May 11th-12th at the Southern Wood Utilization Education Summit in Clemson, South Carolina. The event is hosted by Clemson University's Wood Utilization + Design Institute. There is no fee to attend, however, registration is required. The event is geared towards experts in the field of extension, wood markets, architects, and developers. Attendees will be invited to participate in break out groups that will be instrumental in identifying impediments to expanding the use of wood and wood products.

Dovetail's Founder and Chairman, Dr. Jeff Howe, will present the afternoon of Tuesday, May 11th on the topics of green building, life cycle analysis and the carbon sequestration potential of innovative wood building materials. Dr. Howe's presentation, “Carbon Implications of Materials Selection” will include analysis of buildings from around the world to identify the relative merits of wood products as compared to other industrial materials such as steel and concrete.

The goal of the Summit is develop a toolkit for Extension professionals to espouse the benefits of wood, wood products and increase alternative wood markets for landowners. The Summit will identify key issues facing the increased use of wood and subsequent action items for overcoming the issues identified. Providing alternative markets will lead to increases in the use of local wood that leads to healthier forests, promote rural economic development, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to his role at Dovetail, Dr. Howe is also President of the Right-of-Way Stewardship Council and a teaching specialist in the Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering Department at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Howe's research has focused on defining the critical success factors for both the forest products industry and individual companies, and on economic conditions that transition market benefits back to the natural resource and surrounding communities. He has authored a wide range of articles on issues critical to forestry and forest products, including certification, planning, marketing, and green building. Jeff earned a BS in Biology from Bates College, an MS in Forest Products from the University of Maine, and a PhD in Wood Science & Technology from the University of Minnesota.

The Southern Wood Utilization Education Summit will take place May 11th-12th at the Clemson University Madren Conference Center and Inn. For registration and agenda, visit: www.clemson.edu/centers-institutes/wud/summit/index.html
