Join Dovetail at Greenbuild

Session to address forests and forest products

(Minneapolis, MN) - Join Dovetail Partners, a Minneapolis-based environmental think-tank, at the world’s largest green building conference and expo to take place Oct. 5-7, 2016 in Los Angeles. The Greenbuild International Conference and Expo will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Thousands of building professionals from all over the world will come together at Greenbuild 2016 for three days of outstanding educational sessions, renowned speakers and special seminars. Greenbuild education sessions are eligible for continuing education credits for a number of professional credentials and organizations.

On Thursday, October 6 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Kathryn Fernholz, Dovetail's Executive Director, will present an educational session titled "Getting to the Root of Sustainable Forest Products". This presentation will answer many questions about forests and forest products. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recently issued a LEED Alternative Compliance Path (ACP) that encourages environmentally responsible forest management and expands the certified wood sourcing options for specifiers seeking LEED credits. This presentation will help designers understand how to use the new ACP while providing insight on each of the forest certification systems. Answering many of the common questions about forests and forest products, this session gets to the root of concerns regarding legal and responsible sourcing of wood products. Presented by an experienced forester and advocate of sustainability, it also provides insight regarding the state of the world’s forests and the role of building designers in the future of forest health.

Fernholz is a forester by training and has worked on development and forest management issues in a wide range of roles. With a consulting firm, her work included natural resource inventories, comprehensive planning, environmental impact assessments and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). While working for the Community Forestry Resource Center, she developed and managed a group certification project for family forests and worked to increase local capacity to provide forest management and marketing services that are compatible with certification standards. She is also an experienced Forest Management Certification Lead Auditor and has a BS in Forest Resources from the University of Minnesota, College of Natural Resources.
