Nick Martin

Environmental Policy Manager, Xcel Energy

Nicholas Martin serves as manager of environmental policy for Xcel Energy’s Upper Midwest operations. He is helping to guide the company’s decarbonization strategy through integrated resource planning, investments in renewable energy and natural gas, and electrification of transportation. He also works with Xcel Energy’s large public and private-sector customers to achieve their sustainability goals. Mr. Martin served as the company’s expert witness in Commission proceedings to determine the externality and regulatory cost values assigned to carbon dioxide emissions in resource planning decisions. He leads the company’s Upper Midwest state and federal climate policy efforts.

Prior to joining Xcel Energy, Mr. Martin held positions with Winrock International, working on forestry and renewable energy projects in Russia, the Republic of Georgia, Guinea, the Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Haiti, and China; and with the American Carbon Registry, where he developed carbon offset protocols in forestry, agriculture, livestock, wetlands, oil & gas, and other sectors. He also developed a forestry enterprise at Zuni Pueblo, working with the U.S. Forest Service and other partners on fire risk reduction and forest health projects. Mr. Martin holds an M.S. in Energy & Resources from the University of California at Berkeley and a B.A. in Music from Yale University.
