Nicholas Martin is an Environmental Policy Manger for Xcel Energy, based in Minnesota. He works in climate policy, greenhouse gas emission reduction, renewable energy, energy efficiency and other areas for an electricity and natural gas utility with regulated operations in eight states. Nick formerly served as Chief Technical Officer for the American Carbon Registry, a voluntary carbon reduction program, where he oversaw the development of new offset protocols in a broad range of sectors including agriculture, forestry, livestock management, wetlands, oil & gas sector methane, carbon capture & storage, and destruction of industrial gases. He led the registry’s work as a California Air Resources Board-approved compliance offset registry for the California cap-and-trade market, working with offset project developers, verifiers, regulators, and regulated entities. In an earlier position with Xcel Energy, Nick provided technical analysis and assisted in policy formulation related to national climate legislation, conducted biomass fuel supply analysis, and developed a pre-compliance carbon offset pilot program in Colorado. Nick has an MS in Energy and Resources from the University of California at Berkeley.
